Skid Plate
- Protects crucial areas of the engine – oil pan, oil cooler, oil filter and exhaust header! That’s a long list of very important parts to expose to any sort of damage that will reduce your bikes performance in no time.
- Uniquely designed vent system – No unnecessary holes were designed on this bash plate. As a result, your engine will less likely to overheat when mud and all sorts of debris from offroading fly at the engine and get stuck between the skid plate and the engine/exhaust header.

I am brand loyal to Outback Motortek. I have had their armor on two other motorcycles. So it was really a no brained to purchase their protection package for my DDX.
Having said this, I have a couple of issues with the engine guards for the DDX. This pertains to the installation of the parts only as I have not had the bike out on the trails yet.
First, I don’t like how the upper and lower guards connect specifically the four M6 bolts and bracket. I believe a different bracket type could have used. Second, while the skid plate is plenty beefy I’m left scratching my head as to why the side stand switch wasn’t protected better. It seems vulnerable. I’d suggest a small plate or something similar to fully enclose it or at least help protect it more. Lastly, I found some of the brackets didn’t quite line up. Even with fitting everything very loosely. The inner brace for skid plate comes to mind.
I understand this bike may not lend itself to easy engineering and I’ve heard of other engine guards breaking . So I applaud OM for constructing a beefy and solid protection package. I’m hoping all the brackets and connecting points hold up over time and during the eventual drops.

Just finish installing the Desert X Ultimate protection combo. Have to say one of the more complicated installs I have done on skid plate and /or crash bars.
I used the video to do the install. I found the video to be a very good reference.
I only had to slightly bend the bottom U shaped bracket on the skid plate. A install as complicated as this i was amazed how everything fit up. I only discovered their was two Allen head bolts shiped 8×20 in place what should have be standard hex head 8 x 25mm. Kind of time consuming but nothing anyone one with basic mechanical skills couldn’t do. A lot of thought had to go into the design of these items. Good job.

The ultimate protection combo for the Desert X is well-designed and the components clearly reflect an attention to quality in their manufacture.
I installed the components before a recent 7,500 mile round trip from California to Tuktoyaktuk and definitely put the parts to the test, including rock strikes in addition to all the gravel, mud and general crud.
I particularly like the coverage afforded by the crash bars.
My only suggestions for modifications in future versions would be to incorporate a shield for the side stand switch and to increase the oval cut-outs for the two countersunk screws on the front edge of the skid plate to allow raising the front edge in order to provide greater clearance further back (for example, by the exhaust clamp, the side stand mount, and the catalytic converter central flange).
